On September 17, 2017, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Ira C. Ellis, 57 (DOB: 10/6/59), of Detroit, in connection with killing his niece Katherine Grimes, 42, also of Detroit. On September 15, 2017 at 10:35 a.m., at a home in the 15800 block of Winthrop, it is alleged that Ellis fatally shot his niece multiple times with a handgun. Detroit police officers were called to the scene and placed Ellis under arrest. Medics pronounced Ms. Grimes dead on the scene.

Ellis was charged with First Degree Murder and Felony Firearm*. He was arraigned on September 17, 2017 in 34th District Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail. His probable cause hearing is on September 27, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is on October 4, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
