Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Julian Waddell Miller, 35, of Detroit, in connection with the arson of a Sunoco gas station that injured a 27-year-old Dearborn man who was working as a clerk.

On June 20, 2023, at approximately 2:53 a.m., members of the Detroit Fire Department were dispatched to a gas station in the 19330 block of West Seven Mile Road in Detroit for a reported fire. Upon their arrival, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that Defendant Miller entered the gas station, poured gasoline on the ground, and lit it on fire, causing the station to be engulfed in flames, injuring the 27-year-old victim. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant later the same day.

Julian Waddell Miller has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, First Degree Arson, Placing Explosive Near Property Causing Physical Injury, Placing Explosive Near Property Causing Property Damage, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Arson - Preparation to Burn Real Property Resulting in Injury, Arson - Preparation to Burn Property - $20,000 or More, Malicious Destruction of a Building - $20,000 or More, and Felonious Assault. *

"This seems to be developing into another dangerous trend at Detroit area gas stations. It is a massive understatement to say that arson at a gas station is not a good idea, said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "We will vigorously prosecute anyone that is found responsible for this absurd behavior and will also explore necessary legislative changes to the law regarding arsons specifically at gas stations."

Defendant Miller was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer and given a $100,000 cash/surety bond with aa GPS tether. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for June 26, 2023, before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 30, 2023, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 7, 2023, before Judge Aliyah Sabree. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
