Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jovin Morice Taylor, 38, (DOB: 03/28/1983), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Lance Sutherland, 34, and an assault of a 36-year-old man, both of Detroit.

On September 29, 2021, at approximately 1:37 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a bar in the 6400 block of Woodward Avenue in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim on the ground in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that a verbal altercation between Defendant Taylor and the 36-year-old victim escalated. The defendant fired a handgun fatally striking Mr. Sutherland who was an innocent bystander that had no involvement in the altercation. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on October 13, 2021.

Jovin Morice Taylor has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, once count of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and one count of Second-Degree Felony Firearm.

He was arraigned on October 16, 2021 in 36th District Court and remanded to jail. His Probable Cause Conference is on October 25, 2021, at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photogrtaph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.
