On March 21, 2023, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Jonathan Lamont-John Welch*, 23, of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of Natayla Morse, 24, also of Detroit.

On June 6, 2022, at approximately 12:36 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4630 block of Lenox Street for a reported dead person observed. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim in a field south of the residence, deceased, suffering from blunt force trauma. It is alleged that on June 4, 2022, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Defendant Welch killed the victim with blunt force trauma. It is also alleged that the defendant took the victim's vehicle to the area of Lappin Street and Beland Street before setting it on fire. Further facts and evidence will be place on the record in court at the preliminary examination.

Jonathan Lamont Welch has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Unlawful Driving Away of an Automobile, and one count of Arson of a Motor Vehicle. **

He was arraigned and remanded to jail this morning in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 5, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 12, 2023, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King. *Welch is the same defendant who was charged in 2022 in a Harper Woods homicide case.
