Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Halisa Lloydnette-Christine Brown, 25, and Sturlin Markese Minion, 33, both of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of their five-year-old son.

On December 9, 2023, at approximately 1:24 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 16500 block of Greenfield Road for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the child to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that the child was unsupervised in the home when he found an unsecured handgun and fired it, fatally shooting himself in the face.

Halisa Lloydnette-Christine Brown has been charged with one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, three counts of Second-Degree Child Abuse, and four counts of Felony Firearm.* Sturlin Markese Minion Sr. has been charged with one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, three counts of Second-Degree Child Abuse, four counts of Felony Firearm, and one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, "I have said before and I will say this again and again: What is it going to take for gun owners to store their weapons safely when children are in their homes? How many more children must die? It takes mere minutes to store a gun safely. Is a child's death not worth minutes of one's time?"

The parents were arraigned late yesterday in 36th District Court before Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. Defendants Minion and Brown both received a $250,000 personal bond. They are not to possess alcohol or guns, and are not allowed to have contact with children, including their children.

The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for December 21, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for December 28, 2023, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendants from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
