Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Anthony Smith, 32, (DOB: 11/11/1988), and Tenisha Christian, 39, (DOB: 01/08/1983), both of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of their three-year-old son.

On March 9, 2021, at approximately 2:50 p.m., Detroit police were dispatched to a residence on the 19100 block of Omira Street in Detroit, in response to a gun shot wound of a minor child. Upon arrival, officers located the three-year-old victim with a gun shout wound on their left arm. Medics arrived on scene and transported the child to a local hospital. It is alleged that the child picked up an unsecured handgun in the home and shot himself in the arm.

"This case came to our office on the same day as another child shooting case, as a result of unsafe storage of a weapon, "said Prosecutor Worthy. Way too many innocent, very young children have easy access to these deadly weapons and this situation usually ends up with a seriously injured or fatally wounded child. I do not understand why the adults cannot safely store their firearms."

Anthony Smith has been charged with one count of Child Abuse Second Degree, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and one count of Felony Firearm. Tenisha Christian has been charged with one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and one count of Felony Firearm. * They were arraigned on March 27, 2021 in 34th District Court in Romulus. Defendant Smith received a $10,000 personal bond and Defendant Christian received a $5,000 personal bond. Their Probable Cause Conferences are on May 5, 2021 in 36th District in Detroit. Please request a photo of the defendants from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
