Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Shemeeka Lashawn Walthall, 26, (DOB: 02/17/1994), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal car crash that killed pedestrian Arthur Brewer, 82, of Detroit.

On April 14, 2020 at approximately 3:08 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the area of Evergreen Road and Pilgrim Street in response to a two vehicle car crash with pedestrian involvement. Upon arrival, the officers found the lifeless body of Mr. Brewer. Medics arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

It is alleged that Walthall, with a passenger in her car, drove her vehicle northbound on Evergreen Road at a high rate of speed, crossed the double yellow traffic line on the left, passed a DDOT bus and attempted to re-enter the northbound lane of Evergreen Road. It is further alleged that the defendant then lost control of her vehicle, left the roadway and struck a tree before striking a parked car in a driveway from which Mr. Brewer was unloading groceries. The defendant and her passenger fled the scene. The defendant turned herself in to the Detroit Police.

On April 18, 2020 the defendant was charged with Second Degree Murder, Reckless Driving Causing Death, and Leaving the Scene When at Fault Causing Death.* She was arraigned on April 18, 2020 in 34th District Court by Judge Linda Mack. The arraignment information was not available until this afternoon. The defendant received a $50,000 bond. Her Probable Cause Conference is in April 30, 2020 and the Preliminary Examination is on May 7, 2020 before Judge Ronald Giles. Please contact the Detroit Police Department for a photograph of the defendant.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
