Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Shanitra Janise Newson, 29, (DOB: 06/05/1992), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, Jamel Sandifer, 30, also of Detroit. The defendant and the victim were residing together at the time of the incident.

On March 19, 2022, at approximately 4:11 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 14940 block of Bringard Street in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim in the bathroom of the home with a gunshot wound to his left wrist and right flank. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that a verbal argument between the defendant and the victim escalated, and Defendant Newson produced and fired a handgun, fatally wounding the victim, before fleeing the scene.

Shanitra Janise Newson has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Murder and one count of Felony Firearm. *

She was arraigned yesterday afternoon in 36th District Court and given a $250,000/10% bond. The defendant was also given a GPS tether and placed on house arrest. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 5, 2022, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 12, 2022, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King.
