Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Dontae Ramon Smith, 19, (DOB: 04/30/32003), of Detroit, in connection with his August 28, 2022, shooting spree that killed three people. A surviving man was seriously injured, and his dog was shot in the foot.

There are four separate cases at this time because the incidents were initially thought to be unrelated. The cases will be consolidated at a later date for the purpose of the preliminary examination.

Chayne Lewis Lee, 28, of Detroit

Location:19880 block of Wyoming at 4:45 a.m.

It is alleged that Defendant Smith shot Mr. Lee multiple times, and when he fell to the ground Smith continued to shoot the Mr. Smith. His lifeless body was discovered lying in the doorway of a church by Detroit police officers. It is alleged that the defendant walked away from the scene.

Jane Doe

Location: Wyoming and Margareta at 5:23 a.m.

Detroit police officers responded to a location where a resident heard multiple shots fired and observed a male in dark clothing with a slender build walking east on Margareta Street. The lifeless body of a woman was observed with multiple gunshot wounds.

Lari Brisco, 43, of Detroit

Location: 19790 block of Livernois at 6:53 a.m.

Detroit police officers responded to the scene of a shooting of a female victim later identified as Lari Briscol. Medics pronounced her deceased at the scene. It is alleged that Defendant Smith shot her multiple times and left the scene.

John Palik, 76, of Detroit

Location: Home on Pennington at 7:08 a.m.

Detroit police responded to a home on Pennington for shots fired. It is alleged that Mr. Palik was shot in the leg and his dog was shot in the foot by Defendant Smith. Mr. Palik was taken to a local hospital where he received treatment. He and his dog survived the attack.

On August 28, 2022, DPD officers investigated the shootings assisted by the Michigan State Police the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. DPD received a tip from a relative about Smith. A search warrant was executed at a home in the 7310 block of Pembroke and the defendant was arrested inside the residence and a gun belonging to the defendant was found inside the house.

Today, Defendant Smith has been charged with three counts each of First-Degree Murder, one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Animal Cruelty, and five counts of Felony Firearm. * He was arraigned and remanded to jail on the murder charges and received a $1 million dollar cash/surety bond on the Assault with Intent to Murder and Animal Cruelty charges.in 36th District Court by Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. His Probable Cause Conference is on August 14, 2022, and His Preliminary Examination is on September 21, 2022 before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant after the arraignment.

"It is not an overstatement to say that on Sunday morning, August 28, like a scene out of a movie this alleged defendant reigned real terror on the citizens northwest Detroit. Normal, everyday life was brought to a standstill as he moved east to his next victim. Thanks to a continuous collaboration of law enforcement agencies these deaths and injuries will be aggressively prosecuted by this office, " said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
