Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit Police Officer Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, in connection with the fatal assault of a Daryl Vance, 71, of Detroit.

On September 1, 2023, at approximately 6:50 p.m., in front of a bowling alley in the 4100 block of Woodward Avenue in Detroit, 911 was called because Mr. Vance was disorderly. Officer Brown was dispatched to the location, and it is alleged that a verbal confrontation between he and the victim escalated, and Officer Brown punched Mr. Vance in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. Mr. Vance remained in the hospital from September 1, 2023, until he was pronounced deceased on September 21, 2023. The Wayne County Medical Examiner determined Mr. Vance's death was caused by from blunt force trauma to his head from the punch.

Juwan Marquise Alexander Brown has been charged with Manslaughter, a 15-year felony. * Please contact the Detroit Police Department regarding Brown's employment status.

"Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant. But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation. This behavior cannot be tolerated from our law enforcement," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

He was arraigned today in 36th District Court by Magistrate William Burton and received a $100,000 personal bond .He may not possess weapons or have contact with any witnesses. His Probable Cause Conference is on January 3, 2024, and his Preliminary Examination is on January 10, 2024, both before Judge Kenneth King. Brown is represented by attorney Mathew Forest.
