Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Melvin Phillips, 31, (DOB: 01/16/1991), in connection with the non-fatal shooting of his two-year-old son.

In the afternoon of March 4, 2022, at a home located in the 4000 block of Bedford, the defendant is alleged to have been handling a BB gun that was kept on a china cabinet. The weapon discharged striking his infant son in the lip of his face. The defendant and the child's mother took him to a local hospital for treatment. While there, the parents were met by police officers who subsequently did an investigation of the house removing the BB gun.

Defendant Melvin Phillips has been charged with one count of Child Abuse Second Degree. He was arraigned this afternoon before Judge Joseph Boyer and received a $10,000/10% bong in 36th District Court. His Probable Cause Conference is on March 21, 2022, and his Preliminary Examination is on March 28, 2022, both before Judge Kenneth King.
