Former Dearborn Heights Police Has Charges Dismissed in Assault of Police Officer
On July 24, 2023, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged former Dearborn Heights Police Officer Paul Graf, 33, in connection with the assault of another 23-year-old Dearborn Heights Police Officer.
On December 10, 2021, at approximately 1:25 p.m., at the Dearborn Heights Police Department, located in the 25630 block of Michigan Avenue, it is alleged that while he was employed as a police officer, Defendant Graf assaulted the victim twice by threatening to cut his beard with a knife. Defendant Graf was terminated from the Dearborn Heights Police Department on April 25, 2022. Graf was charged with two counts of Felonious Assault. *
On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, 20th District Court Judge Mark Plawecki heard testimony and viewed video evidence of the incident at the preliminary examination and dismissed the case. Judge Plawecki made a brief ruling, that although the complainant may have subjectively feared a battery, the judge did not believe a reasonable person would have been in fear of a battery. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will be appealing the court's dismissal of the charges.
*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
