On February 14, 2022, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Michael Cortez Norris, 27, of Highland Park, in connection with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Naomi Skinner, 25, also of Highland Park.

On February 12, 2022, at approximately 1:33 a.m., Highland Park police officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 14200 block of 2nd Avenue in Highland Park in response to a 911 call. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim in the fourth-floor hallway of the building deceased with a gunshot wound to the neck.

A physical altercation inside the apartment unit between Defendant Norris and the victim escalated, and a handgun was fired, fatally wounding the victim. The defendant then moved the victim into the hallway of the apartment building before fleeing the scene.

On February 14, 2022, Norris was arraigned on one count of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Tampering with Evidence, and one count of Felony Firearm. On June 15, 2023, he pled guilty to one count of Second-Degree Murder and one count of Felony Firearm.

On July 12, 2023, Defendant Norris was sentenced to 10 to 20 years for Second-Degree Murder and two years to be served consecutive for Felony Firearm in the Michigan Department of Corrections. All other charges were dismissed.
