Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Chavon Caprice Boone, 40, of Detroit in connection with the 2022 homicide of her 4-year-old son Anthony Scott Upshaw, Jr.

On April 10, 2022, in the early evening, it is alleged that Ms. Boone was alone in her child's bedroom in the family home in the 18540 block of Fitzgerald Court in Detroit with her son Anthony when he went into cardiac arrest. The child's father was in another room sleeping when he was awakened by the screams of Ms. Boone and went to the bedroom upstairs and found Anthony unresponsive and began giving him chest compressions. 911 was called and transported the child to a local hospital where he was treated but did not survive. The medical examiner indicated that fentanyl was found in his system, but because it was unknown at the time how it got into his system the cause and manner of death was indeterminate.

On May 19, 2023, Ms. Boone called 911 and was transported to the Detroit Police Homicide Section where she turned herself in for the murder of her son Anthony. It is alleged that she was alone in the child's bedroom when she gave her son narcotics that caused him to go into cardiac arrest and die. She was placed under arrest on the same day. More complete facts and evidence will come out in court at the Preliminary Examination.

On May 21, 2023, Chavon Caprice Boone was charged with Felony Murder, Child Abuse First Degree, and Delivery of a Narcotic Causing Death. * She was arraigned and remanded to jail yesterday in 36th District Court. Her Probable Cause Hearing is on May 31, 2023, and her Preliminary Examination is on June 7,2023, both before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

"There was an unexpected turn of events that brought to us to these charges. Everyone deserves not to be forgotten. This child is no longer a cold case statistic, we will bring justice to Anthony and his family," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
