Detroit Man Charged in Greektown Fatal Shooting

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Denzel Lee Talbert, 22 (DOB: 3/17/93), of Detroit, in connection with a fatal shooting incident that took place in Greektown. On June 21, 2015 at approximately 11:45 p.m., Detroit police were called to the rear of the 400 block of Monroe because gunshots were fired in the area. When they arrived, they observed Martel Taylor, 18, lying in the alley unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. They also spoke to a 21-year-old Detroit man who said he was shot and needed medical attention. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that Talbert got into an altercation with a group of men in Greektown, chased them and fired shots, killing Taylor and wounding the 21-year-old man. More specific facts about the incident will be presented in court at the preliminary examination.

Talbert has been charged with First Degree Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, and Felony Firearm. His preliminary examination is scheduled for July 23, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in 36th District Court

Virgil Smith - State senator charged in non-fatal shooting incident involving his wife. He was bound over as charged by Judge Michael Wagner on felony charges of Malicious Destruction of Property of $20,000 or more, Felonious Assault, Felony Firearm and the misdemeanor charge of Domestic Violence. His arraignment on the information was held today and Judge Lawrence Talon will preside over the case. The next date is the final conference on August 27, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. and the trial is scheduled for December 7, 2015 at 8:30 a.m.

Michael Joseph Brown - Detroit man charged in the non-fatal shootings of a man and woman in her car on Cruse Street. Brown was arraigned and his bond is $250,000 cash/surety; the Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 17, 2015@ 8:30 a.m. before Judge King; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 24, 2015 @ 9:00 a.m. before Judge King.
