Two Juveniles Charged in Beating of Homeless Man

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged De'Vante Howard (DOB 01/14/1999) of Hamtramck and Martell Dewberry (DOB 01/17/2000) of Detroit, in connection with the beating of a homeless man in the 2300 block of Danforth in the city of Hamtramck. Both defendants have been designated as adults and both are charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Commit Murder (life or any term of years).

They are expected to be arraigned today at 1:30 p.m. in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center.

Man Charged in Shooting Death of 16-Year-Old Friend

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Devin Taylor Brown, 21, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl that took place on October 13, 2013 in the 3200 block of Oakman Street in Detroit. It is alleged that Brown fired a single fatal shot that struck his friend in the chest. Further details about the shooting will be presented in court at the preliminary examination.

Brown is charged with Manslaughter - Short Form (15 years), Manslaughter - Death by Weapon Aimed with Intent but Without Malice (15 years) and Felony Firearm (mandatory two years).

Brown was arraigned this morning and his preliminary examination is scheduled for October 24, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in the 36th District Court.

UPDATE - Second Man Charged in Shooting Death of 16-Year-Old

A second man has been charged in connection with this matter. It is alleged that Kermil Smith, 18, of Detroit was present in the house when the shooting took place and lied to the police when they arrived at the scene to investigate. It is further alleged that Smith hid the handgun used in the shooting.

Smith is charged with Accessory After the Fact to a Felony (five years), Obstruction of Justice (five years) and Lying to a Police Officer - Violent Crime Investigation (four years).

Brown was arraigned this afternoon and his preliminary examination is expected to be held on October 24, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in the 36th District Court.

Man Charged in Detroit Opera House Break-In

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Robert Jones, 46, of Detroit, in connection with the October 16, 2013 break-in at the Detroit Opera House, located in the 1500 block of Broadway in Detroit. It is alleged that Jones broke into and entered the Opera House through a back door. It is further alleged that once inside, Brown forced open a cash register.

Jones is charged with Safe Breaking (life or any term of years), Breaking & Entering a Building with Intent (10 years), Malicious Destruction of Building - $1000.00 or More but Less than $20,000.00 (five years), and Malicious Destruction of Personal Property - $200.00 or More but Less than $1000.00 (one year).

"The alleged facts in this case surprise me a bit," said Prosecutor Worthy. "I guess even this institution that is rich with Detroit history is not immune from our crime issues."

Brown is scheduled to be arraigned today at 2:30 p.m. in the 36th District Court.
