Divine Child Church Case - WCPO has a warrant request that is being reviewed in connection with a man who is alleged to have thrown fireworks into the church. An update will be sent out if a charging decision is made today.

Inkster Man Charged in Divine Child Church Case

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged David A. Cerne, 43 (DOB: 02/01/9174), of Inkster, with Third Degree Arson, Arson Preparation to Burn Real Property and Malicious Destruction of Property under $200.*

On August 23, 2017 it is alleged that he went to Divine Child Church, located in the 1050 block of North Silvery Lane in Dearborn and lit fireworks inside the church causing a bible to burn and damage to the walls, the floors and other surfaces. Cerne will be arraigned in 19th District Court. The Dearborn Police have informed us that Cerne may not be transported to Dearborn today, and it is possible that the arraignment may occur on Thursday, August 31, 2017 in the morning.

Detroit Woman Charged in Death of Boyfriend

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Menayetta Yeager 27 (DOB: 07/19/1990), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of her boyfriend Jonte Maurice-Louis Brooks, 29, of Detroit. On August 27, 2017 at 1:15 a.m., in the 7900 block of Mack, is alleged that Yeager was riding in a truck driven by Labarren Borom, 44 (DOB: 01/14/1973), of Detroit, when she fired shots at Brooks while he was driving his van. After Brooks was shot, his van crashed into a tree. The facts and evidence in the case will be presented in court at the preliminary examination.

Defendant Yeager has been charged with First Degree Murder and Felony Firearm*. Defendant Borom has been charged with Accessory After the Fact.*. Both defendants were arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Charles Anderson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for September 12, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for September 19, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Lydia Nance Adams in 36th District Court. Defendant Yeager was remanded; Defendant Borom received a $25,000/10% bond.

His probable cause conference is for September 8, 2017 and his preliminary examination is scheduled for September 15, 2017, both at 9:00 a.m.

Father Eugene Katcher - See Archdiocese of Detroit press release attached. Katcher was arraigned this morning in 35th District Court before Judge Ronald Lowe. The probable cause conference is scheduled for September 8, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge James Plakas. The preliminary examination is scheduled for September 15, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Michael Gerou in 35th District Court. The defendant received a personal bond.

Detroit Man Charged in Homicide of Chef Doug

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Travun Eugen-Jani Baskerville, 26, (DOB: 08/17/1990), of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of Douglas Jeffrey Calhoun, 39, and human-trafficking a 17-year-old female. All of the parties are Detroit residents.

Calhoun was last seen by a relative on May 31, 2017. A missing person report was filed with the Sixth Police Precinct on June 2, 2017. On July 7, 2017, Calhoun's lifeless body was discovered at a vacant dwelling in the 14600 block of Greydale Street in Detroit. The medical examiner determined that the victim died from multiple gunshot wounds.

On June 1, 2017, it is alleged that Baskerville had been engaged in human trafficking a 17-year-old female. On the same day, it is alleged that she phoned Calhoun and arranged a date with him at Baskerville's home in the 14600 block of Burgess in Detroit. During the date, it is alleged that Calhoun and Baskerville had an argument that led to Baskerville fatally shoot Calhoun and subsequently remove his body to a vacant house on Greydale.

Baskerville has been charged with First Degree Murder, Human Trafficking Enterprise Involving Death, Human Trafficking of a Minor for Commercial Sexual Activity, Child Sexually Abusive Activity, Possession of Child Sexually Abusive Material, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Felony Firearm*. Baskerville was arraigned this morning before 36th District Court Magistrate Bari Blake Woods. The probable cause conference is scheduled for September 15, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for September 22, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Lydia Nance Adams in 36th District Court.

Detroit Mother Charged in Death of Her One-Year-Old Son

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Shaquittea Denice Reese-Bethea, 31, (DOB: 08/18/1986), of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of her one-year-old infant son. On August 29, 2017 at 9:41 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the apartment of the defendant in the 3600 block of West Vernor. When the officers arrived, they found an infant male that was unresponsive and not breathing. Medics who were called to the scene pronounced the child dead at the scene. It is alleged that on August 29, 2017, the defendant killed her son by stabbing him multiple times. The defendant was transported to a local hospital for treatment for bleeding wounds on her body.

The defendant has been charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Torture, and Child Abuse First Degree*. First Degree Murder and Felony Murder are crimes where the defendant, by law, must be remanded to jail. Reese-Bethea was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Charles Anderson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for September 12, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for September 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m... Both hearings are before 36th District Court Judge Kenneth King.
