DPD Corporal Charged in Assault of Female DMC Patient

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit Police Corporal Dewayne Jones, 47 (DOB 7/2/71), in connection with the assault of a female hospital patient. On August 1, 2018, at approximately 7:10 p.m. Jones was on duty in full uniform when he arrived at Detroit Receiving Hospital located in the 4200 block of St. Antoine and encountered a 29-year-old female at the front desk. It is alleged that she was spitting, shouting profanities at the staff, and bit a police officer on the forearm and thigh. It is alleged that when Jones attempted to restrain her, he punched her in the face and upper body.

Jones has been charged with Misconduct in Office, a felony with a five year maximum penalty and Assault and Battery, a 93 day misdemeanor.* He was arraigned on November 27, 2018 and received a bond of $5000. Today Jones had his Probable Cause Hearing and his Preliminary Examination has been scheduled for December 19, 2018 before Judge Cylenthia Miller at 10:00 a.m.

Man Charged in Drug Death in Dearborn Heights Fast Food Parking Lot

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Ryan Patrick Dwyer, 41 (DOB: 11/23/1977), of Dearborn Heights, in connection with the August 26, 2018 narcotics overdose death of Ricky Cox, 24, of Baypoint, California.

On August 29, 2018, the lifeless body of Cox was found in the passenger side of a car in the parking lot of a Taco Bell in the 4500 block of Telegraph Road in Dearborn Heights. Three days earlier, on August 26, 2018, it is alleged that Dwyer delivered a controlled substance to Cox that caused his death. Dwyer also stole his personal property and fled from the location. Investigation by the Dearborn Heights Police Department led to the arrest of Dwyer. The facts and evidence in the case will be presented at the preliminary examination.

The defendant has been charged with Homicide - Delivering a Controlled Substance Causing Death, Involuntary Manslaughter, Larceny from a Person, and Illegal Use of a Financial Transaction Device.*

Dwyer was arraigned and remanded to jail today in 20th District Court in Dearborn Heights. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for December 12, 2018 and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for December 19, 2018 in 20th District Court.

Elementary Student Charged with Bringing Loaded Weapon to School

On December 5, 2018, at approximately 2:40 p.m., a 10-year-old (DOB: 2/17/2008), Detroit student of Spain Middle School is alleged to have concealed a loaded handgun in his book bag. A fellow student observed the weapon and immediately reported it to school authorities. The gun was confiscated from the child without incident. The school is located in the 3700 block of Beaubien in Detroit.

The 10-year-old has been charged as a juvenile with Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Possession a Weapon in a Weapon Free School Zone.* He is under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court, and is not subject to adult penalties for the charges. Other aspects of the case remain under investigation.

A Preliminary Hearing was held today at the Juvenile Detention Facility located on 1326 St. Antoine Street in Detroit before Referee Leslie Graves. A $5,000 personal bond was ordered. A Pre-Trial Hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019 before Referee Mona Youssef at the Lincoln Hall of Justice. As a condition of bond, the youth may not have access to any firearms or weapons. He must comply with the expulsion from school, and may not be on any school property until authorized to do so by school authorities.

Hazelwood Street Shooting Case - WCPO has received a warrant request for this case. It is currently being reviewed. An arraignment will not take place at 2:30 p.m. today in 36th District Court in this case. An update will be released when a charging decision has been made.

Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Shooting at HYPE Athletic Center

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Antoine Perry, 16 (DOB: 05/06/2002), of the City of Wayne, as an adult, in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Ypsilanti man.

On November 26, 2018 at approximately 5:20 p.m., City of Wayne police officers were dispatched to the HYPE Athletic Center in the 6300 block of Howe Road in Wayne, MI. Upon arrival, the officers found an adult male victim in the lobby of the building, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

On November 26, 2018, it is alleged that Perry contacted the victim to purchase marijuana. When the victim began to drive away, Perry attempted take the marijuana without paying for it. It is further alleged that the defendant fired a weapon at the victim, striking him multiple times. The victim made his way into the lobby of the athletic center prior to his transfer to the hospital. Further facts and evidence in the case will be presented on the record at the Preliminary Examination.

The defendant has been charged with one count of Felony Murder, one count of Armed Robbery and two counts of Felony Firearm.* He was arraigned and remanded to jail today. The Probable Cause Conference will be held on December 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination will be held on December 28, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. in 29th District Court in Wayne.

Detroit Man Charged in Hazelwood Non-Fatal Shootings

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Robert Davon McLendon*, 29 (DOB: 10/13/1999), of Detroit, in connection with a shooting incident. On December 5, 2018, at 2:00 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to canvas the area of Hazelwood because of a report of multiple shots being fired. They observed a man later identified as the defendant in the 3240 block of Hazelwood running toward Wildemere. McLendon was ordered him to stand down, and the police placed him into custody. A handgun and a magazine were recovered in the area by the police.

It is alleged that on December 5, 2018 in the early morning hours, McLendon shot into a house in the 3200 block of Hazelwood while the three female residents were inside the home. No further information is being released by WCPO at this time because other aspects of the case remain under investigation.

McLendon is facing the following charges: four counts of Assault with Intent to Murder; two counts of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon with Unlawful Intent; eight counts of Discharging a Firearm at a Building; one count of Delivery/Manufacture Cocaine less than 50 Grams; and eight counts of Felony Firearm.**

McLendon was arraigned and remanded to jail today in 36th District Court. His Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for December 14, 2018 and his Preliminary Examination is on December 21, 2018.

Detroit Man Charged in Non-Fatal Shooting at Appliance Store

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Javon Robert Dabney, 26, (DOB: 10/22/1992), of Dearborn Heights, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 59-year-old male appliance store manager, of Garden City, and a 35-year-old male employee, of Detroit.

On December 5, 2018 at approximately 4:20 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to an appliance store in the 20100 block of West Warren in Detroit. The defendant purchased several appliances from the store. It is alleged that after delivery, the defendant complained to the store manager, on the phone, as well as in person, that the stove did not work. The manager advised him that the store did not offer refunds, but would replace the stove he purchased. It is alleged that the defendant argued about the stove and threatened the owner, manager and employees of the store and left. Within 30 minutes, it is alleged that the defendant shot the manager several times, as well as other male employee who tried to leave the scene. The defendant then fled the scene on foot. Investigation by the Detroit police led to the arrest of the defendant.

Dabney has been charged with Armed Robbery, Conspiracy to Commit Assault With Intent to Murder, three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, three counts of Assault With Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm.*

Dabney is expected to be arraigned in 34th District Court in Romulus on December 8, 2018.
