Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Miguel Gomez, 26 (DOB: 10/25/1993), of Allen Park, in connection with property damage to the Fort Street Bridge in southwest Detroit.
On September 16, 2020 at approximately 7:00 p.m., Detroit police officers responded to a location in the 10500 block of West Fort Street and Miller Road in response to a hazardous conditions call. Upon arrival, the officers discovered a vehicle at rest on the western side of the Fort Street drawbridge over the Rouge River. It is alleged that the defendant struck and drove through the bridge's security gate at a high rate of speed. Because the security gate was not fully lowered, the vehicle went airborne before landing on the other side of the bridge. Police officers arrested the defendant at the scene.

Prosecutor Worthy said, "These pandemic times have seemingly brought out the worst in many Michigan drivers. The rules of the road the same and there is no place for drivers who refuse to follow them and instead try alleged stunts like this."

Gomez is charged with Malicious Destruction of Property - $1,000-$20,000, Reckless Driving and Malicious Destruction of Property - Gate/Fences.* The defendant was arraigned September 19, 2020 out-county in 34th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 21, 2020 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court. Gomez received a $3,500 personal bond. Please contact the Detroit Police Department of a photograph of the defendant.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
