Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash with Teen on Mini Bike

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Decarious Terrell Davis-O'Neal, 24 (DOB: 07/12/1994), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal car crash that killed a 15-year-old Detroit male.

On June 12, 2019 at approximately 7:10 p.m., Detroit police responded to a call regarding a two vehicle car crash on Helen Street near Robinwood Street in Detroit. Upon arrival, the officers discovered the 15-year-old victim in a driveway in the 18600 block of Helen Street. Detroit EMS transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It is alleged that the defendant was traveling northbound on Helen Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle, striking the victim. At the time, the victim was sitting stationary on a mini bike, on the sidewalk in front of a nearby house. Investigation by the Detroit police led to the arrest of the defendant at the scene. Facts and evidence of the case will be presented at the Preliminary Examination.

Davis-O'Neal has been charged with Reckless Driving Causing Death a felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.* This afternoon WCPO was informed that the defendant would be arraigned on Saturday, June 15, 2019 in Romulus because the warrant was processed so late in the day. However, WCPO has recently been informed that he was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 24, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 1, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenyetta Stanford-Jones in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $1,000,000 cash/surety bond. A photograph of the defendant is attached.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
