Detroit Dad Charged in Infant's Death

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Thomas Smith, 38, (DOB: 03/26/1979), of Detroit, in connection with the death of his two-year-old infant daughter.

On February 11, 2018, Detroit Police officers responded to a 911 call to a residence in the 14000 block of Corbett Street in Detroit. It is alleged that the defendant left the toddler in the care of her seven-year-old brother, without adult supervision. It is further alleged that when the defendant returned home, the infant girl was lying at the bottom of stairs. 911 was called and medics responded to the location. The child was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Smith has been charged with Child Abuse Second Degree*. WCPO has been informed this morning that the defendant was arraigned on the warrant on February 14, 2018 before 36th District Court Magistrate Dawn White. The probable cause conference is scheduled for February 21, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for February 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $100,000/10% bond.
