Sterling Heights Man Charged in Taylor Homicide
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Vernest James Griffin, 45, (DOB: 12/09/1972), of Sterling Heights, in connection with the fatal shooting of Keith Allen Kitchen, 60, of Garden City, MI.
On February 1, 2018, at approximately 10:33 a.m., Taylor police were dispatched to a business located in the 24000 block of Pennsylvania in Taylor, MI. It is alleged that Griffin entered the business and fired several shots at the victim, killing him. It is further alleged the defendant carjacked a semi-truck and left the scene. It is also alleged the defendant drove to Pontiac where another fatal shooting occurred. The defendant is currently in the custody of Oakland County authorities.
Griffin has been charged with Murder - First Degree, Carjacking, Armed Robbery and Felony Firearm*. He was arraigned in the hospital and was remanded. The probable cause conference is scheduled for February 21, 2018 in 23rd District Court in Taylor. There is no preliminary examination date at this time.
*The charges are allegations unless and until the defendant is convicted.
