Wayne County Sheriff Reserve Officer Charged in Fatal Car Crash

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit reserve police officer Michael L. Davis, 58 (DOB: 08/05/1959), of Detroit, in connection with a fatal car crash that killed Daniel Starks, 30, of Detroit. On June 23, 2018 at 11:30 p.m., it is alleged that Defendant Davis was driving his truck at Grand River and Meyers when he struck Mr. Starks, while he was riding his motorcycle. Detroit police officers arrived at the crash scene and rendered medical assistance to the victim until he was transported to a local hospital. Upon arrival, the victim was pronounced dead from multiple injuries he sustained in the crash. The police observed the defendant with slurred speech and a flask in the front cup holder in his truck. The defendant is alleged to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, and in possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest at the scene.

The defendant has been charged with Operating Under the Influence Causing Death (15 year felony), Reckless Driving Causing Death (15 year felony), Moving Violation Causing Death, a misdemeanor and Weapons-Firearms-Possession Under the Influence, a misdemeanor.*

Davis was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The probable cause conference is scheduled for July 3, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for July 10, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court. The defendant was remanded to jail.
