Detroit Man Charged in Apartment Building Arson

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged James Bishop Craft, III, 22, (DOB: 05/23/1996), of Detroit, in connection with the arson that occurred at an apartment building in Detroit.

On March 22, 2019 at approximately 10:47 a.m., the Detroit Fire Department responded to an active fire of an occupied building in the 12200 block of Schaefer in Detroit. The Fire Department worked to extinguish the fire and remove all of the occupants from the building. A 16-year-old occupant from one of the apartments sustained significant burns to her body and medics transported her to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Investigation by the Detroit Police led to the apprehension of Craft.

It is alleged that Craft firebombed the apartment building. Further facts and evidence will be presented at the Preliminary Examination.

Craft has been charged with First Degree Arson.* He was arraigned on March 26, 2019 before in 36th District Court Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 8, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 15, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Ronald Giles in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $400,000 cash/surety bond.
