Two Detroit Police Officers Charged with Willful Neglect of Duty

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit police officers Stephen Heid, 26, (DOB: 04/23/1991) and Ronald Cadez, 28, (DOB: 12/10/1989), in connection with a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Maiden Street near Park Drive in Detroit.

On October 9, 2017, at approximately 10:18 p.m., Detroit Police Officers Heid and Cadez observed a vehicle traveling at an increased rate of speed on Maiden Street and Park Drive in Detroit. It is alleged that the officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, activated their overhead lights, and pursued the vehicle. The car was driving at a high rate of speed and when the car was a block and a half away from the police, it crossed an intersection and collided with another vehicle. Heid and Cadez left the immediate scene and it is alleged they failed to notify the dispatcher that they were engaged in a pursuit. It is further alleged that the defendants neglected their duty when they failed to respond at the scene of an accident. The driver of the car was identified as Jerry Bradford, Jr., 19, of Detroit. Bradford was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead from injuries he sustained in the crash.

Both defendants have been charged with Willful Neglect of Duty*. They were arraigned today in 36th District, and received $5000 personal bonds. Their pretrial conference is scheduled March 26, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Roberta Archer.

*The charges are allegations unless and until the defendant is convicted.
