Two Men Charged in Pier Park Crash

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Dawaun Al McQueen, 23, (DOB: 06/24/1996), of Clinton Township, and Michael Thomas Sims, 29, (DOB: 11/08/1989), of Chesterfield Township, in connection with a car chase with another vehicle that began at Seven Mile Road and Hoover in Detroit and ended in Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms. The victims in the case were three Detroit males in their twenties.

On July 13, 2019, at approximately 5:58 a.m., Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Officers were dispatched to Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms about a vehicle submerged in the water of the park. It is alleged that the defendants were involved in a chase with another car when they crashed into Pier Park. It is further alleged that the actions of the defendants posed a significant threat to victims, witnesses and the public. The defendants were apprehended by the Grosse Pointe Farms police on the day of the incident. The facts and evidence in the case will be presented in court at the Preliminary Examination.

Dawaun McQueen has been charged with the following offenses*:

Assault with intent to murder (three counts);
Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder (three counts);
Assault with a dangerous weapon (three counts);
Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury;
Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle;
Carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle;
Possession with intent to deliver less than 50 grams of cocaine;
Felon-in-possession of a firearm;
Felon-in-possession of ammunition;
Fleeing and eluding-3rd degree;
Felony firearm-(14 counts);

Michael Sims has been charged with charged with the following offenses*:

Assault with intent to murder (three counts);
Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder (three counts);
Assault with a dangerous weapon (three counts);
Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury;
Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle;
Carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle;
Felony Firearm (11 counts)

McQueen and Sims were arraigned on July 17, 2019 before Grosse Pointe Farms Municipal Court Judge Matthew R. Rumora. Both Probable Cause Conferences are scheduled for July 31, 2019 at 8:00 a.m.; the Preliminary Examinations are scheduled for August 7, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Matthew Rumora in 32C District Court. McQueen received a $1 million dollar cash bond; Sims received a $500,000 cash/surety bond. Please request photos of the defendants from the Grosse Pointe Farms Police Department.
