Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Alyssa Taylor Usher, 30, of Riverview, in connection with a car crash that killed Lillian Caldwel, 44, of Port Huron, and injured a 52-year-old Port Huron man, a 25-year-old woman, a 31-year-old man, and a three-year-old girl, all of Allen Park.

On March 16, 2024, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Southgate police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Allen Road and Orchard Avenue for a reported crash. Upon their arrival, officers located Mrs. Caldwel unresponsive in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle, the 25-year-old woman in the center rear passenger seat and the three-year-old girl in the driver's side rear passenger seat, suffering from multiple injuries. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital for treatment. Mrs. Caldwel succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased later the same day.

It is alleged that Defendant Usher was intoxicated, driving southbound in the northbound lane of Allen Road, when she collided head on with the victims' vehicle, fatally injuring Mrs. Caldwel, and non-fatally injuring the remaining victims.

Alyssa Taylor Usher has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, and two counts of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury.*

"This case is yet another example of the proliferation of violence that occurs when someone is behind the wheel of a car and blatantly fails to follow the rules of the road. A car is yet another possible instrumentality of death - especially if one is not even sober enough to operate it," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

She was arraigned this morning in 28th District Court and given a $1 million cash/surety bond with an alcohol and GPS tether. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 28, 2024, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 4, 2024, before Judge Elisabeth Mullins. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Southgate Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
