On January 16, 2022, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Janette Ann Smith, 30, (DOB: 09/15/1991), of Roseville, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a three-year-old boy in Detroit.

On January 14, 2022, at approximately, 4:45 p.m., Ms. Smith went to a home in the 1880 block of Lafayette to visit the child's mother to pick up some food that was prepared for her.

It is alleged that Ms. Smith took off her coat with a handgun in the pocket and hung it on the chair in the living room. When she went into the kitchen to speak with the child's mother, there was a loud bang in the living room. The child found the weapon and shot himself in the head. He was privately transported to a local hospital by his mother and is currently receiving treatment.

Ms. Smith has been charged with one count of Careless, Reckless, or Negligent Use of a Firearm. * She was arraigned on Monday, January 17, 2022 in 36th District Court and given a $10,000/10% bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for January 24, 2022 and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for January 31, 2022 in 36th District Court before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

"It is getting very difficult to come up with new ways to say the same thing over and over again. If you own a gun and you know young children will be in your orbit, secure it so that there will be no access," said Prosecutor Worthy. "If you are traveling with a gun, follow the law while doing so, and by all means make sure that children cannot get to it. Secure your gun and save young lives from death, serious injury or harm of any kind."

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
