Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Debra White, 65, (DOB: 04/07/1957), of Detroit, in connection with a car crash that killed 13-year-old Zyiar Harris of Detroit. Ms. White was a driver for the ABC Bus Company that transported Zyiar from a Detroit Public School on April 6, 2022.
On April 6, 2022, at approximately 4:41 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the area of East Nevada Avenue and Healy Avenue in Detroit for a reported auto accident. Upon their arrival, officers discovered medics providing medical attention to the victim. Medics transported Zyair to a local hospital for treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on April 10, 2022.
It is alleged that Defendant White, who was the victim's bus driver, did not activate the bus's stop lights and stop sign for the victim to safely cross the street.
Debra White has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Child Abuse and one count of Failure to Stop at Scene Resulting in Death. * These charges were issued on April 10, 2022, before Zyair passed away. The case will be reviewed again when WCPO has reports from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.
She was arraigned on April 10, 2022, in 36th District Court and given a $50,000 personal bond.
