Today, John Clayton III, a Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officer assigned to the Metro North Post, was arraigned in the 34th District Court in Wayne County on five misdemeanor counts of Impersonating a Public Officer (MCL 750.215) authorized by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

MSP motor carrier officers have limited police authority to enforce traffic safety laws on commercial vehicles. The charges result from five separate traffic stops he made between August and September of 2022, involving non-commercial, passenger motor vehicles.

In September, during a review of his activity, a supervisor noticed the traffic stops and an investigation commenced.

Clayton will remain on suspension pending the outcome of the criminal case and any resulting administrative investigation.
