Taylor Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Nickolas Shawn Cannon, 42, of Taylor, in connection with the fatal shooting of Lakeshia Smith, 38, of Detroit.
On June 20, 2023, at approximately 5:49 p.m., Taylor police officers were dispatched to a motel in the 9300 block of North Telegraph Road for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located Ms. Smith inside a motel room, suffering from a gunshot wound to the forehead. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
It is alleged that a verbal argument between the defendant and the victim escalated, and Defendant Cannon produced and fired a handgun, fatally wounding Ms. Smith.
Nickolas Shawn Cannon has been charged with First Degree Premeditated Murder, Domestic Violence Third Offense and two counts of Felony Firearm. *
He was arraigned and remanded to jail this afternoon in 23rd District Court before Judge Joseph Slaven. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 3, 2023, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 10, 2023.
