Two Detroit Males Charged in Robbery of Off-Duty DPD Officer
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Dwayne Whitley ,16, and Marlon Henderson ,17, both of Detroit, in connection with the robbery of an off-duty Detroit Police Officer. They are being charged as adult defendants.
On June 10, 2023, at approximately 5:39 p.m., at a gas station in the 18130 block of Joy Road, it is alleged that Henderson robbed the officer of his department issued firearm while Whitley pointed a handgun at the officer. It is further alleged that after a physical altercation, the officer regained control of his weapon, and the defendants fled from the scene. The officer was not injured in the altercation.
Dwayne Whitley has been charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Disarming a Police Officer, one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and three counts of Felony Firearm. *
Marlon Henderson has been charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Disarming a Police Officer, and two counts of Felony Firearm. *
"The defendants in this case attacked our victim, a police officer in full uniform on his way to work, for no apparent reason," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "Everyone in the gas station at that moment in time was extraordinarily lucky that this situation did not escalate into losses of life."
They were arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court before Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath. Defendant Whitley was given a $200,000 cash bond. Defendant Henderson was given a $175,000 cash bond.
A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for June 20, 2023, before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 23, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 30, 2023, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Patricia Jefferson.
