Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Damariyon Keon Coleman, 17, (DOB: 08/25/2002), of Detroit, and D'Anthony Kendricks, 17, (DOB: 05/08/2002), of Warren, in connection with the fatal shooting of 58-year-old Brett Moore, of Detroit.*

On January 15, 2020 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Detroit Police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 8300 block of Smart Street in Detroit. Upon arrival, the officers discovered the victim suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds. Medics transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that Defendants Coleman and Kendricks approached the residence located in the 8300 block of Smart Street, knocked on the door and asked if the victim was there. It is further alleged that when the victim opened the door, the defendants fatally shot the victim multiple times. Investigation by the Detroit Police led to the arrest of the defendants. The facts and evidence in the case will be presented at the Preliminary Examination.

Both defendants have been charged with First Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.** They were arraigned on January 23, 2020. in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conferences are scheduled for February 2, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examinations are scheduled for February 13, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. All hearings are before Judge Ronald Giles in 36th District Court. Both defendants were remanded to jail.

*The 17-year-olds are prosecuted as adults, not juveniles. However, they are juveniles for purposes of sentencing for first-degree murder because the US Supreme Court has held the ordinary penalty of mandatory life without parole cannot apply to those under 18, but they are adults for all other purposes.

**The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
