Westland Man Charged in Fairlane Town Center Non-Fatal Shooting of Brother
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged James Edward Townsend, 25, of Westland, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man of Canton. Defendant Townsend is the brother of the victim.
On May 15, 2024, at approximately 12:00 a.m., at Fairlane Town Center Mall, located in the 18900 block of Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, it is alleged that a verbal altercation between the defendant and the victim escalated, and Defendant Townsend produced and fired a handgun, striking the victim in the leg, before fleeing the scene. The victim privately transported himself to a local hospital for treatment. Investigation by the Dearborn Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant later the same day.
James Edward Townsend has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Receiving and Concealing a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Felonious Assault, and four counts of Felony Firearm.*
"Shooting a deadly weapon in public has become normalized. This time it was an alleged dispute between brothers on the property of Fairlane Mall. It seems at times that no place is safe and that is indeed the most tragic thing of all," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
He was arraigned and remanded to jail on May 16, 2024, in 19th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for May 29, 2024, at 8:00 a.m., before Judge Eugene Hunt. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Dearborn Police Department.
*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
