Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Winston Kirtley Jr., 36, (DOB: 07/09/1986), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shootings of Toyake Thirkeild, 39, and Andre Willis, 38, and the non-fatal shootings of a 40-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 32-year-old woman, all of Detroit.

On July 31, 2022, at approximately 2:44 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 11630 block of Coyle Street in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located multiple victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victims to a local hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that a verbal altercation between Defendant Kirtley and the victims escalated, and the defendant produced and fired a rifle multiple times, fatally wounding Mr. Thirkeild and Mr. Willis, and non-fatally wounding the remaining victims.

Winston Kirtley Jr. has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder, six counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, two counts of Discharge at a Building, and 10 counts of Felony Firearm. *

He was arraigned and remanded to jail this morning in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 18, 2022, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for August 25, 2022, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

"I have always known that at times the most trivial events can cause the heaviest damage. The alleged motive here is way beyond the pale and has now changed lives forever", said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "It is clear and has been clear for some time that absolutely nothing is sacred when it comes to gun violence these days. It is also apparent that there is little political will to control the mechanisms behind it."

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
