David Madrigal Case - Today Judge Michael Callahan granted People's motion to reinstate Felony Murder and Armed Robbery counts as to Defendant Nicole Oneill and Felony Murder as to Defendant Rasnick. A Special Pretrial has been set for September 6th, 2016. Trial date remains October 17th, 2016. A competency/criminal responsibility report is still pending for Defendant Soto. His next date is September 12, 2016 for a competency hearing.

Detroit Man Charged in the Non-Fatal Shooting of Seven-Year-Old Boy on Fairfield Street

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Torrey Craft, 24 (DOB: 12/3/91) in connection with the nonfatal shooting of a seven-year-old boy on Fairfield Street in Detroit. On August 15, 2016, Craft had an argument with male relatives of the mother of his four-year-old daughter when they refused to let him into their home located in the Fairfield Manor housing complex. On August 16, 2016 at 10:00 p.m., Craft was in the 3600 block of Fairfield in the courtyard area of the housing complex when he observed the same male relatives. It is alleged that Craft fired a handgun in the direction of the males and hit a seven-year-old boy. The boy was injured in the groin area and transported to a local hospital where he is currently being treated.

Craft has been charged with three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder and Carrying a Weapon with Unlawful Intent and Felony Firearm. Defendant Craft's probable cause hearing is scheduled for August 26, 2016 and his preliminary examination is scheduled for September 2, 2016.

Devan James Williams - Defendant in the homicide of musician Anthony Tolson that occurred on December 24, 2015 on Gratiot in Detroit. Today Williams was sentenced on the Second Degree Murder charge 11 to 40 years in prison and two years to be served consecutively on the Felony Firearm charge.

Lavere Bryant - Defendant convicted in the Dearborn Family Dollar double homicide. The Michigan Court of Appeals has issued an opinion and order granting the defendant a new trial issued on August 23, 2016, that was received today by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. WCPO will seek leave to appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court. The defendant will remain incarcerated. The application for leave to appeal must be filed within 56 days from the issuance of the order.

John Francis Maguire - American Airlines co-pilot charged with entering an airplane cockpit while under the influence of alcohol. Today, the defendant entered a no contest plea to Operating Under the Influence/Aircraft. He was sentenced to 12 months reporting probation (with 45 days in jail if he violates), alcohol assessment and treatment and 48 hours of community service within 120 days. His current treatment has been coordinated with his probation, which will be transferred to the defendant's home in Pennsylvania. The 34th District Court, however, will retain supervision.

Mateen Cleaves - Former MSU basketball player charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a 24-year-old Mount Morris, MI woman. Today all of the defense motions were denied. The preliminary examination date is scheduled for September 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in 67th District Court.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy's Statement Regarding the Richard Wershe Case

Having been immersed in the Juvenile Life Without Parole Murder cases for the last six months, I have noted parallels to the Richard Wershe case that have caused me to review the office position in his case. However, it is important to note that only the Michigan Parole Board determines who does or doesn't receive parole.
