Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program

The Department of Health, Veterans & Community Wellness VFC program works with community providers to make sure that uninsured and under-insured children get the vaccines they need. Our goal is to make sure that children in Wayne County are up to date on their immunizations so that they are protected from diseases such as pertussis. Staff in this program visit doctor’s offices to conduct staff trainings and makes sure that the offices are following the Centers for Disease Control guidelines for the program. Approximately 150 pediatric and family practice offices participate. HVCW staff completed 100 visits to provider’s offices last year. We also offer VFC vaccines in our clinic.

School Immunization Program

Children entering kindergarten thru 7th grade are required to be up to date on vaccines. Schools are required to report children’s vaccine data to the local health department through the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MICR).HVCW monitors 70,000 children’s immunization records in over 900 schools and child-care programs through MICR. Students who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated can be excluded from school if there is a vaccine-preventable disease outbreak at their school.HVCW's goal is to help make sure students are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.
