Wayne County Public Health COVID-19 Booster Eligibility Criteria

Who is Eligible for Moderna COVID-19 Boosters?

· People 65 years and older

· People age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions

· People age 18+ in long-term care settings

· People aged 18-64 who live or work in high-risk settings

Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised people age 18+

For immunocompromised people, a 3rd dose of Moderna vaccine should be received at least 28 days after a second dose followed by a booster covid vaccine 6 months later. All others should be received at least 6 months after a second dose

· People 65 years and older

· People age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions

· People age 18+ in long-term care settings

· People aged 18-64 who live or work in high-risk settings

· Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised people age 12+

For immunocompromised people, a 3rd dose of Pfizer vaccine should be received at least 28 days after a second dose followed by a booster covid vaccine 6 months later. All others should be received at least 6 months after a second dose

· The use of a single booster dose of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 2 months after completion of the single-dose primary regimen to individuals 18 years of age and older.

· Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) is the only booster dose that is available to all person aged 18 years of age and older regardless of priority population categories.

Immunocompromised includes people who have:

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Authorization of "Mix and Match" Booster Dose

A single booster dose of any of the available COVID-19 vaccines may be administered as a booster dose following completion of primary vaccination with a different available COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 18 years and older. For people aged 12-17 years, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is the only approved booster vaccine for those with immunocompromised conditions. The eligible populations and dosing interval for a booster dose are the same as those authorized for a booster dose of the vaccine used for primary vaccination.

*Vaccine providers should administer booster dose based on priority population categories as approved by the FDA per these guidelines. These guidelines are subject to be updated in the future based on further approvals by the FDA.
