Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Deontay James Harper, 27, (DOB: 08/31/1994), Ciera Lecha Mcgilmer, 28, (DOB: 01/15/1994), and Calvin Lewis Mcgilmer, 46, (DOB: 08/10/1975), all of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of Syraya Lee, 35, also of Detroit.

On May 15, 2022, at approximately 3:55 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 5420 block of Lakepoint Street in Detroit. Upon their arrival, officers observed members of the Detroit Fire Department extinguishing a vehicle fire. Once the fire was extinguished members of the Detroit Fire Department observed the victim in the trunk of the vehicle, wrapped in carpet with a bagover her head. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

It is alleged that on May 15, 2022, at a residence in the 19440 block of Moenart Street in Detroit, Defendant Harper strangled the victim, fatally injuring her. It is further alleged that the defendants moved the victim's body and her vehicle to a home in the 5420 block of Lakepoint Street before setting the victim's car on fire with her inside. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrests of Defendant Harper and Ciera Mcgilmer on May 17, 2022. Calvin Mcgilmer was arrested on May 18, 2022.

Deontay James Harper has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Fourth-Degree Arson, one count of Tampering with Evidence, and one count of ThirdDegree Fleeing and Eluding. *

Ciera Lecha Mcgilmer has been charged with one count of Tampering with Evidence and one count of Accessory After the Fact. *

Calvin Lewis Mcgilmer has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Murder, and one count of Tampering with Evidence. *

The defendants were arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court. Defendant Harper and Defendant Calvin Mcgilmer were remanded to jail. Defendant Ciera Mcgilmer was given a $50,000 personal bond with a GPS tether and placed on house arrest. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 3, 2022, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 10, 2022, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King.
