Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of His Mother
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Malik Asante Smith, 27, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of his mother, Lorraine Smith, 54, also of Detroit.
On October 14, 2023, at approximately 11:16 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 15000 block of Bringard Drive for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Ms. Smith in a bedroom of the home suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
It is alleged that a physical altercation escalated, and Defendant Smith produced and fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding his mother.
Malik Asante Smith has been charged with First-Degree Murder, and Felony Firearm. *
He was arraigned and remanded to jail on October 17, 2023, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 31, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for November 7, 2023, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King.
