Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Michael Watkins, 59, (DOB: 07/08/1962), of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 41-year-old Detroit man.

On August 20, 2021, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a building in the 8650 block of Mount Elliot Street in Detroit for a reported shooting/active shooter. Upon arrival, officers located the victim with a gunshot wound to the face. Medics arrived on scene to treat the victim's injury. It is alleged that a verbal argument between the defendant and the victim escalated and Defendant Watkins fired a handgun, non-fatally wounding the victim, before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on September 2, 2021.

Michael Watkins has been charged with one count of Assault With Intent to Murder, one count of Assault With Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, one count of Carrying With Unlawful Intent, one count of Discharge in a Building Causing Injury, one count of Felonious Assault, one count of Felon in Possession, one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and five counts of Felony Firearm.*

He was arraigned on September 2, 2021 in 36th District Court and given a $75,000/10% bond. He was also ordered to have no contact with the complaining witness. If the defendant is released on bond, he will not be able to have any weapons. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 13, 2021 at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 20, 2021 at 8:45 a.m., both before Judge Kenyetta Stanford Jones.
