Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 16-year-old juvenile male, (DOB: 09/20/2005), of Pontiac, in connection with a fatal car crash that killed 11-year-old Xavier Mena and injured a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, all of Pontiac. The three victims we all passengers in the car driven by the juvenile respondent.

On May 14, 2022, at approximately 12:00 a.m., Detroit police officers were in the area of Russel and Warren when they attempted a traffic stop on the Juvenile's vehicle. It is alleged that the juvenile fled from the officers at a high rate of speed before crashing into a tree in the 2660 block of East Canfield, fatally injuring Xavier, and non-fatally injuring the remaining passengers. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced Xavier deceased. The juvenile respondent and the remaining passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The juvenile respondent has been charged with one count of Reckless Driving Causing Death, two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Injury, one count of Fourth Degree Fleeing and Eluding, and one count of Operating - No License. *

His Preliminary Hearing was held yesterday in the Lincoln Hall of Justice, and he was given a $3,000 cash/surety bond. The Control Date is scheduled for June 21, 2022, at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Karen Braxton.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
