Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans $8M Investment into City of Livonia Approved by Wayne County Commission

Investment to assist in relocating outdated Livonia Senior Center and create new Wellness Center

LIVONIA, MI - Yesterday, the Wayne County Commission approved Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans' $8 million investment to the City of Livonia. This investment will help to create a wellness center that's anticipated to service over 19,000 seniors. The new center is part of Livonia Vision 21, the city's Master Plan adopted in 2019. This development serves as the first step in implementing Livonia's community-inspired initiative to create a mixed-use downtown in its civic center area.

The $21 million project will include the relocation of the Livonia Senior Center, adjoining it to the Jack E. Kirksey Recreation Center. The new 25,000-square-foot facility will be fully integrated with the recreation center to create a full-service wellness center that accommodates growing public health needs. The center will be known as The Livonia Wellness Center. Although the city of Livonia houses one of the highest senior populations in Wayne County, the Livonia Wellness Center will extend beyond the 35 square miles of the city and serve the regional senior population, with an approximate 22 percent of users coming from outside of the city. This project will expand access to programs and services made available through Livonia Parks and Recreation and the Livonia Housing Commission, while creating new spaces for community partners to offer services and workshops for at-risk residents.

"Investing in our community's well-being is the most significant investment we can make," said Executive Warren C. Evans, "Our $8 million investment in The Livonia Wellness Center is not just a financial commitment; it's an investment in the physical, mental, and emotional health of our residents, and a testament to our dedication to building a stronger, healthier, and happier community for generations to come."

The new Livonia Wellness Center is anticipated to provide new housing for 1,245 new Livonia residents and create nearly 80 jobs. In addition, the project will include a covered connector hallway from the wellness center to the recreation center, an enlarged fitness area, as well as multipurpose rooms. The gymnastics and daycare areas will also be revitalized. Additional updates will occur to the facility's outdoor space.

The county's contribution adds to a growing economic impact as this project paves the way for a larger $200 million transformational redevelopment project. Relocating the Livonia Senior Center will allow the demolition of the existing Livonia Senior Center, providing significant financial benefits to the City as it engages private partners and creative financing options to redevelop city-owned property at this underutilized intersection at the City's center.

The project is anticipated to be complete in 2025.
