Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Chad Alexander Smith, 33 (DOB: 03/04/1986) city of residence unknown, in connection with an attempted carjacking, shoot out with Romulus Police, a subsequent hostage situation and standoff in Romulus.
On August 3, 2018 at approximately 5:23 p.m., Michigan State Police were contacted by the Romulus Police Department for assistance regarding a previously injured man inside a residence in the 34540 block of Wick Road in Romulus. It is further alleged that Smith then encountered Romulus Police officers and a shoot-out ensued before he entered the residence. Smith was injured in the shoot-out and while in the residence, took a seven-year-old boy hostage for several hours before the standoff ended with the defendant's surrender to the police.
Smith has been charged with:

Prosecutor Worthy said, "We are very grateful that the young child was physically unharmed as a result of this incident. The fact remains, however, that Mr. Smith must face the serious criminal consequences of his alleged actions."
Smith was arraigned today in 34th District Court in Romulus and will remain in custody. He has been referred for competency; the court will inform the parties when the forensic reports are completed and will set a court date at that time.
